Club Case March/April 2009
Spring is very much in the air and this month Club members can experience a taste of France outside the mainstream areas. Names like Vacqueras, Vaucluse, Madiran and Cahors don’t roll off the tongue as easily as Bordeaux and Burgundy but are there to be enjoyed and appreciated. These are largely undiscovered areas yet producing excellent fruit driven wines with impressive regional characteristics.

Petit Caprice - Vin de Pays de Vaucluse
Vignerons de Caractere
Syrah / Grenache/ Carignan, Vin de Pays, France - Rhone 2006
2 x 75cl Bottles (RRP €10.50 each)
Big burst of ripe berry fruits on nose with a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate it is dry with balanced acidity and mellow yet well structured tannins. Excellent weight of ripe berry fruits on the palate with a hint of cherry and vanilla. Big warm finish that lingers on the palate.

Pigmentum Malbec - AOC Cahors
Georges Vigouroux
Malbec, AC, France - South West 2005
2 x 75cl Bottles (RRP €11.50 each)
From the home of Malbec, a grape which made famous the 'Black Wines of Cahors', this mellow earthy wine has a delicious warmth of flavour so typical of this region. Packed with ripe black fruits, a hint of spice and a lingering finish. Drinking beautifully now but will last another year or two. Lovely labelling and presentation.

Domaine du Moulié - AC Madiran
Georges Vigouroux
Tannat, AC, France - South West 2004
2 x 75cl Bottles (RRP €11.99 each)
The jewel in the crown of the South West appelations - this Domaine bottled wine epitomises the style and class of the region. Huge extract of autumn berry fruits with firm tannin structure and a wonderful length on the palate.

Villa Symposia - 'Le Merlot'
Villa Symposia
Merlot, Vin de Pays, France - Languedoc 2005
1 x 75cl Bottle (RRP €19.99 each)
Villa Symposia produces very few wines - but they are all superb! Low yields from old vines bring a wonderful dimension to the hand crafted wines from this most interesting property. Although classed as a Vin de Pays (Merlot is not permissable under AOC regulations in Languedoc) this is a delicious wine, with excellent ripe bramble fruits, some cassis and cedar wood flavours leading to a long lingering finish.

Vacqueyras - Marquis de Fonsequille
Vignerons de Caractere
Grenache 60%, Syrah 30%, Mourvedre 10%, AC, France - Rhone 2006
1 x 75cl Bottle (RRP €14.50 each)
Facing the slopes of Mont Ventoux the vineyards of Vacqueyras are among the most important in the Southern Rhône valley. Based on a soil of schist and gravel they enjoy uninterrupted sunshine giving ideal ripening conditions.

Le Palombier - Vdp du Comté Tolosan
Georges Vigouroux
Colombard / Ugni Blanc, Vin de Pays, France - South West 2007
2 x 75cl Bottles (RRP €10.50 each)
Bright, pale lemon colour with pleasant stony fruit flavours. This is a light easy-drinking wine.

Georges Vigouroux
