Continuing the theme of Bordeaux with an Irish connection, the third week of releases of En Primeur Bordeaux has seen many of thetop Chateaux with Irish linksrelease their wines. The Wine GeeseChateaux of Leoville Barton, Lynch Bages and Chateau Fieuzalhave released their wines in the last two days. Irish wine investors are keenly watching this week and here’s why; Chateau Lynch Bages have released their wines at 34% lower than last years prices. Chateau Fieuzal is a whopping 27% lower than last year which is great news for wines that have always enjoyed huge popularity in the Irish market.
Why are release prices much lower this year?
The reasons for buying wines ‘En Primeur’ are twofold. Firstly, one can get access early to the best wines by purchasing and securing them early. Secondly, the prices should be the lowest prices on the market so that the wines will appreciate over time and become worthy investments, rewarding early purchases. Over the last few years, there have been consistently great vintages and the prices have risen steadily. If they keep rising, it would become cheaper to buy wines on the second hand market that are ready to drink, rather than from the Chateaux directly during the ‘En Primeur’ campaigns. Therefore the whole system needed a reset. The pricing needed to drastically drop this year, so that the wines were cheaper than second hand wines of the same name elsewhere in the marketplace. Regardless of the quality of the wines this year, vignerons and wineries knew they needed to drop and reset the prices in order to entice investors back into buying wines that will appreciate again in time. That is what has happened and it is working this year. It is less to do with the quality of the wines and more to do with the protection of the system so that it entices buyers year after year.
We know the pedigree of the wines is impeccable. We know that the interest and resale-ability of the wines with Irish interest that have been released this week is high. Now that you can getChateau Lynch Bages at 34% lower than last year,Chateau Fieuzal at27% lower than last yearandChateau Leoville Barton at10% lower than last year, it makes investing in these wines a really great proposition this year.
